Maple Syrup!
Hi Spot! readers. Happy Canada Day and Independence Day to my USA friends.

On that same theme of cross border celebrations I am happy to say that the Mack family will be a new import from Canada to the USA. I’ve taken a new position with American Greetings as an in-house illustrator for greeting cards. We are so excited by this new opportunity and can’t wait to get settled in our new home in Cleveland, Ohio!

A little history, I have been working mostly in the greeting card industry for the last couple of years and I really enjoy the medium. I find it’s the perfect canvas for the way I like to work. Soon American Greetings hired me to a freelance contract which is fantastic if you are a freelancer with a family like I am. Guaranteed income is very welcome!

Then opportunity came knocking as a position came up in-house and I was asked if I’d like to take it on. I did have some reservations as we had our second baby on the way and it would mean a huge cross and out of country move. To add to my reservations we had just bought a new house here in Canada that we were sure would be our house for many, many years to come. It turns out I had more reservations about it then my wife did! My wife Erin scolded me for not jumping at the chance and was all for it. So with that AG flew me down to Cleveland to check out what it’s all about and I was totally blown away by what a fascinating place it is to work and the amount of illustration talent under one roof. By the time I flew back I was sold and the Mack’s were soon online searching housing properties.

At this point we’ve just arrived back after a harried week of finding a new house with a two year old and a 4 week old in tow but it was all worth it. We can’t wait to get down to Cleveland and become part of our new community.

Of course, this wont change anything as far as freelancing is concerned I am still taking on all projects from spots to books! So drop me a line!

Best,
Steve
